About the Mississippi Gulf Coast Camellia Society

The charming city of Greenville, Alabama is the quintessential southern town with a rich history, beautiful Victorian homes and an abundance of camellias. Greenville is known as The Camellia City and played a major role in the camellia being named Alabama's state flower.

The first camellia plants were brought and planted in Greenville by the pioneer migration in the 1840s. Very large and very old camellia trees are sprinkled throughout the city. Aurelia Herbert Calhoun is said to have brought the first Camellia Japonica to Greenville from South Carolina in 1848.

The Greenville Camellia Society is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote interest in and knowledge of our state flower, the Camellia Japonica, and other varieties of camellias. Our purpose is to identify, care for, and promote our historical camellias in and around our city, including Beeland Park, Pioneer and Magnolia cemeteries, and downtown. We encourage our citizens to continue to plant camellias to preserve our namesake as The Camellia City. We hold many fun activities and fundraisers throughout the year to support our mission. GCS is an all inclusive organization that welcomes men and women as members.

The Greenville Camellia Society is proud to honor the heritage of The Camellia City and reclaim Greenville’s legacy of holding an annual camellia show. Our first annual show in January 2024 was a smashing success! We hope to recapture the magic of the historical camellia shows held here in the 1950s. Our goal is to promote our community and increase tourism in Greenville.

In the Spring of 2023, our historic Beeland Park Gardens became the 65th garden named to the national American Camellia Trail. Holding an annual American Camellia Society-sponsored camellia show comes with this prestigious designation. It is our mission to continue to raise the interest of Greenville’s camellia history and heritage.

Meredith Green-2727 Eudora Welty House and Gardens - Jackson, Mississippi
The garden at the Eudora Welty house, “my mother’s garden,” was a labor of love designed and created in 1925 by Chestina Welty. Today it remains a labor of love for garden restoration consultant Susan Haltom and a committed core of volunteers. These women, who have named themselves “The Cereus Weeders” in honor of Welty’s beloved night blooming cereus, have carefully restored the garden to the 1925-1945 period when Eudora Welty worked at her mother’s side planting, watering, and weeding.
