Heartwood Nursery is a retail and wholesale business which was established by Dan and Patty Charvet in 1981. The nursery specializes in gorwing general nursery stock and camellia hybrids. Dan Charvet was mentored by Toichi Domoto and concentrates on breeding camellias for landscape value, rather than shows.
The nursery has six greenhouses with approximately 10,000 plants. Every year Charvet hand-pollinates around 2000 flowers, gets around 1000 seeds, 800 seeds germinate and approximately 600 survive long-term. Most of seedlings bloom in five to seven years.
