About the Garden
The Sam M. Wellborn Camellia Garden is located on a hillside with asphalt walkways and a beautiful fountain centerpiece. While work on the garden is still ongoing, it is already being utilized as a teaching tool and photo opportunity as well as a beautiful, restful area.
About the Camellia Collection
Total number of camellia plants: 750 +
Number of distinct camellia cultivars or species: unknown
The Garden was planned and planting began in 2012 with the installation of 150 camellias. The Garden has now grown to a collection of over 500 varieties of camellias, including both tried and true and the latest and best varieties. Well-known area nurseryman Tommy Alden chose the categories and worked with our landscape architect on placement. In the center of the garden is a spectacular fountain. We are attempting to have at least 750 different camellias in this garden with primary emphasis on old and new reticulatas and japonicas.
In the lower half of the garden there are currently seven groupings of camellias: Fragrant, Historic, Hybrid, Japonica, Miniature, Reticulata, and Species. The upper and newly planted section houses rare and new camellia species, thus ensuring variety, interest and educational opportunities.
