About the Gardens
A reproduction of a 16th Century garden had The Lost Colony of Roanoke Island survived to build. The garden is full of winding woodland paths exhibiting 16th century fountains and statuary. Distinctly formal hedges define the Orangery Courtyard and Sunken Garden. Whimsical paths wind you through ancient Live Oaks, at least one dating back to 1585. A nursery which sells plants from the Elizabethan Gardens collection and gift shop compliment the grounds.
The 16th Century statues and fountains found here exist nowhere else on earth and remind us of a time of unrivaled garden making. The ancient trees and tightly trimmed hedges emulate a garden from the Elizabethan times. The horticultural collection exhibits some of the finest Camellias in North Carolina. The paths are adorned with lush shade gardens which serve as a cool respite in warmer months. The summer showcases the formality of the English garden and the fall and winter months features a non stop cavalcade of blooms. The diverse collection of Camellias is sure to treat until the Azalea collection begins to beckon the spring. Hydrangeas and unique specimens carry color through the summer months
